The Adagio Cantabile movement was composed in 1798 and is the second movement from Beethoven's Piano Sonata No. 8, Op. 13, commonly known as the Sonata Pathetique. A typical performance lasts about 19 minutes. Beethoven composed a total of 32 Piano Sonatas between 1795 and 1822. He began to lose his hearing in 1799.
In 1970, Daniel Barenboim, aged 28, was the youngest pianist to record the complete set of Beethoven piano sonatas. His record was broken in 2013 by Chinese pianist Mélodie Zhao aged 19.
