Hearts and Flowers
In another soulful oldie we venture into the key of D Minor and learn how to interpret Da Capo al Fine notation.
The Sheet Music:
"Hearts and Flowers" is written in the key of D minor and has the key signature of Bb. As before this means that whenever we come across a B note in the music we need to remember to play the Bb instead. The key signature of F major is also Bb making D minor the relative minor of the key of F major.
The 7th note of the D minor scale and sometimes the 6th note are also raised. This makes the notes of the D (harmonic) minor scale: D E F G A Bb and C#. You can see in the music that there are is a C# accidental note in the song that is not included in the key signature.
The "Da Capo al Fine" notation is used to minimise the amount of space needed to write out sheet music. Da Capo al Fine means repeat the music from the beginning and end at the word "Fine". Following this notation, we play this tune from the start of the music through to the repeat dots and the "Da Capo al Fine", then repeat from the beginning and end at the work "Fine" which appears at the end of Line 2.
The following are the style and settings choices that I used in the video demonstration. As always, let your own creativity be your guide and develop an interpretation of this song that feels right for you.
