The 1st Gymnopedie was published in 1888. Satie composed 3 Gymnopedies, the last of which was published 7 years after the first.
Satie entered the Paris Conservatoire in 1879, where he was soon labelled untalented by his teachers. Georges Mathias, his professor of piano at the Conservatoire, described his pupil's piano technique in flatly negative terms, "insignificant and laborious" and "worthless". He was also called "the laziest student in the Conservatoire"
